Recurring Lurking IP Addresses

Very often you will find the ip address of 66.249.*.* visiting your board and maybe even appearing to be doing things that a guest should not be able to do.

Do not worry.

This is a GoogleBot doing a routine search of your site, keeping tabs on any changes and 'merely feeling' around. It cannot actually view private messages it is just 'passing by that door' as it moves through the junctions in cyberspace.

In your Admin Panel Index, if you click on an ip address currently visiting your board a new window will open which provides a tool to look up the owner or origin of the address. Once the window has opened the ip address will automatically be entered into the submission box for searching. Click "Submit" and wait a minute for the results to be displayed.

There are other search engines which behave similarly such as Live, Yahoo and Ask.

I should also mention that although recurring lurking visitors are not registering, and may also appear to be doing things that they should not be able to do, it could in fact mean that you have interested readers instead who often browse around, pressing buttons, seeing what things do, but not necessarily intending to actively participate in any discussion or activity.

Which is still a good thing, I suppose. Cool
